Storm Shelters
At 10pm on May 4, 2007, Greensburg, Kansas was hit by a massive EF5 tornado carrying 205 MPH winds and cutting a swath through the little town almost two miles wide. The tornado demolished 95% of the town, including all the churches, schools and downtown businesses. Eleven people perished in the tornado and 961 homes were destroyed, leaving most of the 1200 resident homeless.
As the town began to rebuild, SI Precast Concrete was chosen by the United Way and FEMA to provide storm shelters to every residence and business in Greensburg. To date, SI Precast Concrete has provided over 150 storm shelters that will be there to protect the residents in the event of another severe storm or catastrophic tornado.
These storm shelters feature 5,000# PSI concrete, reinforced with rebar and 10 gauge steel mesh, along with a 12 gauge steel door with a unique locking device allowing it to be opened from the inside, even if the storm shelter were damaged.
